Nidri is the most popular tourist resort, the largest in Lefkada. It is located in the middle of Lefkada – Vassiliki route and stretches along the eastern coastline. Opposite are the famous Prince Islands (Scorpios, Skorpidi, Madouri, Sparta) and further away is Meganisi.
It is an ideal base for visits to the church of Agia Kyriaki, the cave of the nymphs, the grave of William Dorpfeld (German architect and archaeologist, who identified Lefkada being Homer’s Ithaca), waterfalls and Dimosari canyon. There, in early summer when the water is still abundant, we can swim in the icy, refreshing water emanating from the island’s high mountains.
The village became well known when in 1963 shipowner Aristotle Onassis bought nearby island Scorpios. Since then, the village has hosted numerous celebrities from around the world. At the port of the village you will now see a statue of Onassis.
Lefkada is an island of the Ionian Sea and together with the islands of Corfu, Kefalonia, Ithaka, Zante and Paxi form the Ionian Islands region. It is the fourth largest island in the Ionian Sea (320 sq. Km) and the fourth in population with about 23,000 inhabitants in the census of 2011.
The connection with the mainland is made by a floating bridge, while the channel has a width of 50 meters.
Lefkada has many picturesque beaches characterized by turquoise waters which are amongst the most beautiful in the country and the Mediterranean Sea. On the west coast, the famous Porto Katsiki Beach has been voted by international travel magazines as the most beautiful Mediterranean beach.
The natural landscape of the island harmoniously coexists with numerous old and modern works of man. Particular elements of the cultural heritage of the island is the city of Lefkada itself, with its historic center, the town houses with narrow streets and the Castle of Santa Maura.
